Notice to MediaHighway Police Set Up Inspection Station, Increase EnforcementLITTLE ROCK (6-3) -- In conjunction with International Highway Transportation Safety Week June 1-5, the Arkansas Highway Police Division of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has stepped up its enforcement activities, primarily on Arkansas Interstates. According to AHTD Director Dan Flowers, Highway Police officers are focusing on speed enforcement and safety inspections on commercial vehicles. An inspection station is set up at Mayflower on westbound I-40. Officers at the station are conducting around-the-clock inspections on commercial vehicles for a 48-hour period which began Thursday, June 3 at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, June 5. Speed enforcement activities are taking place statewide. Highway Police officers and representatives from the Federal Highway Administration are also handing out brochures and educational material at the Fort Smith and West Memphis Tourist Information Centers this week. "This event is a way to remind people that safety must be everyones top priority while driving," Flowers said. "Our officers receive special training to deal with the larger, commercial vehicles, therefore that is where we will concentrate our efforts. But safety is the responsibility of all drivers." On April 13, 1999, Governor Huckabee proclaimed the week of June 1-5, 1999, as "International Highway Transportation Safety Week" in Arkansas. The purpose of the week is to encourage citizens to re-emphasize their dedication and commitment to the safety and well-being of all motorists who share the roads. The U. S. Department of Transportation is coordinating the event through safety agencies in the United States, Canada and Mexico. #### For Further Information Contact:
